Midterm Submission

I made some changes to my cover while designing. At first, I wanted to cut out just the model's body for the cover so that the pink background would be seen. However, I realized that would be too difficult and decided that the picture taking up the entire cover looked nicer. It look simpler and more clean cut. I also chose not to have the top of the model's head cover some of the letters in my title because I ended up preferring that it went over her head. I made the headline larger on my cover and decided to make it pink. This way there was another pop of color that went well with the yellow of the title. I used more fonts than I originally planned because I wanted more variety. I also added the pink circle because it complemented the pink font well and it added more variety in the format of the cover. 

I did not change much with my table of contents. I added a page number, the title of the magazine, and the website for the magazine at the bottom of the page because I noticed that most magazines do that. I had to end up using two pictures for my table of contents. I was originally only going to use the bottom picture, but when I formatted it to where I wanted it, it was too stretched out. These pictures go well together because they are quite dark for the most part. Darkness of the pictures complemented the dark color of the writing. I also chose to remove one of my articles from my table of contents to make it less cluttered and only decided to write the page that each article started on rather than all the pages they appeared on. 

For my article I decided to have it mostly consist of my interview, because it was very detailed and it included very good points. There wasn't much room for me to add extra and I had trouble formatting it correctly. I really wanted to have the picture of the makeup stand as a background for my title but it took a very long time for me to figure out a way to make the title and the picture visible. I wrote a short description at the beginning of my article just to give an overview. I had some trouble finding room for my other two pictures, but through editing some of the text and pacing it within the text, I was able to fit them in. All the pictures I used in the article were taken in the dressing room and all the models were cast member in White Christmas at Sarasota High School. I wanted the title to stick out with a very girly font, but then make the rest of the rest of the article a simple, easy to follow font.

Photo Shoot

My scheduled photo shoot went very well. For the pictures I used a professional camera. I had to wait till my model was ready before I could start pictures, because we had a show that day. I had some struggles with the lighting because backstage it was very dark. I had to do many test shots before I could get the proper brightness inn the picture. I then I had to readjust my lighting when we moved outside. Due to the fact that my model stood in front of a white wall, I had to be sure that the exposure was not too high in the picture. other than the lighting issues, the pictures turned out great. I tried various different poses with my model that I felt could potentially look good on my cover. The other models I used in the dressing room were very cooperative. I had to maneuver myself so I could not be seen in the reflection of the mirror, however once I figured that out the pictures came out nicely. Here are pictures from my photo shoot:

Schedule Photo Shoot

I plan for my photo shoot to occur the week of December 9-14. This will be the week that the show I am in, White Christmas, will be running. During this time I plan to photograph one of the cast members, Merrill Garlington in full hair, makeup, and costume. She will be wearing a white, sequin flapper dress, shimmer tigths, and tan character shoes, as well as have her hair pulled back. She will have a full face of makeup, including false lashes. She will be set as the model for my cover as well as the table of contents. Furthermore, because my main article will be on stage makeup and that process, I will include pictures of the stage, dressing room, and actors getting ready. I will also include a picture of Lacey Knispel who is the director and the one I will be interviewing.

Scouting Locations for Photo Shoots

For scouting my locations, a majority of my photo shoots will happen in the Sarasota High School theater. Although these will be in the same building, they will be in different parts of the building as a theater is very complex. I will hold my photo shootings on the stage, backstage, in the dressing rooms, and in the tech booth. Photos for my cover will occur outdoors along one of the white buildings on campus because they will provide a clean look. The photo of my interviewee will be taken in the tech booth or backstage to represent her position as the director and someone who is fully involved in the action. In the dressing room I will be able to show the cast members beautifying themselves for the stage and show what dressing rooms look like in the midst of a show. The picture used for my table of contents will most likely be taken on the stage because it will be a full body shot. I may include photos of a makeup store to just to show a variety of makeup products.

Schedule Interviews and Develop Questions

For my main article, I will be interviewing Lacey Knispel. She is the drama teacher at Sarasota High School, and the director of our musical, White Christmas. Lacey is also an active member in community theater as a performer and teacher, along with the fact that she is trained in stage makeup, including special effects makeup. I will be interviewing her on December 10, as on that day it is our last dress rehearsal before the show. This will be essential in catching her in the midst of theatrical events.

Sample Questions:
Why must normal makeup be so intensified and dramatized on stage?
What aspects play into choosing the hair and makeup of each actor?
How long does it typically take to get an entire cast in full hair and makeup?
How long have you been using stage makeup?
Are there specific guidelines in how you apply makeup for the stage?

The answers to these question and the rest of the questions that will be asked in the interview are important to readers because it will cover all the components of stage makeup. It will properly cover the planning of the hair and makeup, the purpose of it, the process of doing it, and the experience of the one I am interviewing. This will give the readers a clear and overall understanding of how stage makeup/hair works, how it differs from other forms of beauty, and why it is so important in theatre.

Flat Plan

I aimed to included the wide range of topics that beauty magazines normally cover. Normally beauty magazines include articles on makeup, hair, and skin, so naturally I included content covering all those areas. Alongside my featured article, I included tips on skin care, reviews of products, quizzes, recipes, success stories in beauty, editors letter, beauty trends etc. I wanted to include a few articles that included because that frequently attracts readers, being that they want to be up to date on their favorite celebrities or to be like them. For that reason I included an article on Kylie Jenner as she is one of the dominators of the makeup industry, a celebrity beauty look book, and wildest hairstyles on the red carpet. A lot of beauty magazines that I looked included various picture heavy pages of celebrities to show their fashion trends, accessories, and products. I thought it interesting that I include a quiz in the magazine because I know that from personal experience, I enjoy engaging in the magazine. Being that my magazine revolves around Sarasota and was the December edition, I chose to include many articles related to that. My Sarasota articles focus on many things that define Sarasota, such as beach tips, reviews of shops and beauty services, etc. Being that health is a huge focus in today's society, I included articles on the rise in organic products, healthy habits, age savers, pregnancy tips, the usage of natural everyday items (aloe). Overall, I wanted my magazine to be fully engaging and cover all things beauty. So many things in our daily life and society can apply to our beauty and I wanted to acknowledge that to attract many readers. 

Table of Contents

The articles that I chose to put in my table of contents are ones that I feel truly stand out in the magazine. I decided to split my table of contents into the three main components of beauty: makeup, skincare, and hair. I also chose to include the three featured articles of my magazine as most magazines choose to display their featured articles in the table of contents. In each section I wanted to chose articles that covered a decent range. In my makeup section I picked articles that focused on purchasing products, makeup tips, and improvements in makeup production. In my skincare section I picked articles that appealed to all ages and ones that related to the season and Sarasota. In my hair section I picked articles that included more product reviews and celebrities. I included all of my featured articles and chose to place them at the bottom of the table of contents as they are the more lengthy articles and appear more towards the end of the magazine. I decided not to include my quiz, recipe, or some of my shorter articles because I wanted to include the articles that properly displayed to aim of my magazine. I am only going to include one magazine. I got this inspiration from various magazines such as Elle, Glamour, and Marie Claire. I want to keep my magazine simplistic and sleek because I feel too many picture in the table of contents is overwhelming. I filled my table of contents with a range of fonts to give it character and to make it easy to follow. For the title in my table of contents I chose the same font I used for my title on the cover. I am trying to keep the name very uniform. The titles for each section used the same font as the writing on the rest of the cover. I made the page numbers bold and big to stand out to the readers. I then made the titles of the articles Times New Roman to add some simplicity to the fonts.  

Cover Template

I wanted to make the cover of my magazine very girly and visually appealing. I chose the title Sunkiss because this is a magazine specifically in Sarasota, Florida and related to Sarasota beauty. Sarasota is a very sunny and warm area year round. Being that it is known for its famous beach, Siesta Key, I chose to relate the title based on that. People in Florida are typically quite tan and it is commonly considered beautiful to have your skin be sun-kissed. I chose to make the title bright yellow to represent the sunlight. I chose to use the Broadway font in size 100 and capitalized so that it really popped across the top. I wanted to use the Broadway font because it is very unique and beauty is something that reveals your uniqueness. I used the Elephant font for the rest of the text on the cover to ensure an easy to read font that is still not your typical Times New Roman. I colored the text black so that doesn't clutter the cover with too much color and it contrasts well with the light colors. I italicized the headline to draw attention to is.  I also decided to make the background a soft, baby pink. This contrasts well with the bright yellow and adds to the femininity of the cover. The picture on the cover will be a closeup head shot of a girl. It will only be of their head so that the pink background can still be shown. I got inspired by the close up shot on the Allure magazines and how the title crossed over their head. I want to do a close up shot to be able to show the makeup on the model.
